Modern Foreign Languages

The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Department currently offers two languages, French and Spanish.

In Year 7, pupils will enjoy 3 hours of French and 3 hours of Spanish fortnightly with Year 8 enjoying 3 hours of French and 2 hours of Spanish fortnightly. From Year 9, students can continue with French and Spanish at GCSE level, either choosing to continue with one language or both. The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department makes lessons as active and engaging as possible. Students enjoy food tastings, theatre and cinema trips and excursions abroad.

Both French and Spanish are offered at GCSE according to the AQA syllabus, and regular extension sessions are held to support students with the availability of a conversation and homework club.  In 2016, we had results of 90% A*-C for Spanish in 2016 and 76% A*-C 100% pass rate for French.

The MFL department offers many opportunities for pupils to experience French and Spanish culture. In 2014 KS3 and KS4 pupils visited the Lille Christmas market for the day where they used their conversational skills to enhance their French and in 2015, KS3 pupils went to Paris where they took in the sights, practiced their French and honed their sketching skills as well as learning a lot about the history of WW2.  We hope to offer more trips in the future to give all students the opportunity to practice the language they have learnt in the classroom in a real setting.

One of the highlights of the MFL calendar is Bastille Day, on 14th July, when the MFL Department hosts a festival on the field for year 7 and 8 pupils to mark the start of the French Revolution and to celebrate French culture. Last year pupils enjoyed a cheese tasting, a game of Boules, and in-school competitions.

From the success of the MFL results in 2016, we plan to introduce A Level French in the foreseeable future, allowing our students to continue their love of language learning at Baylis.
